What Non-Follower Reach Tells You
Every Reel is seen by two groups: people who already follow you and people who do not. The second group is where new followers come from, so the share of your reach that comes from non-followers is the clearest single sign that your Reels are finding new people rather than circulating among the ones you already have.
Above 40% for the share of your Reels' reach that comes from accounts that do not follow you is the level worth aiming at, and Below 20% for the share of your Reels' reach that comes from accounts that do not follow you means your Reels are mainly reaching people who already follow you. Both are Retensis targets, not an Instagram average.
| Range | Rating | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Above 40% | Aim for | A large share of the people seeing your Reels are new to you |
| Below 20% | Mostly followers | Your Reels are mainly reaching people who already follow you |
Where to See It
With Instagram connected, Retensis shows it as Reach From Non-followers on your Instagram tab: the share of the accounts your Reels reached over the last 30 days that do not follow you. It is a figure for your Reels as a whole, because Instagram does not report the split for a single Reel, and boosted Reels are included.
Read it as a trend, not a single number. A month where the share rises after you changed how your Reels open is worth more than any one Reel's reach.
Win the First 3 Seconds
A non-follower has no reason to give you time. They decide in the opening, which is exactly what Instagram's skip rate measures. 20–30% for the first 3 seconds of a Reel is a healthy opening, and the lower the better. Instagram Reels skip rate benchmarks covers the full range.
Make the first frame and the first line work for someone who has never seen you: state the payoff, show the result, or open on the most surprising moment rather than an introduction. Analyze the Reel before you post it, and after it is live compare Instagram's skip rate with the prediction to see whether the opening did its job.
Make Reels People Send and Save
Shares carry a Reel to people who do not follow you, and saves show it was worth coming back to. Above 1% for shares as a share of total plays and Above 2% for saves as a share of total plays are the levels worth aiming at.
Reels get sent when they bring a specific person to mind, and saved when they are useful later: a method, a list, a place, a recipe. Build one of those two reasons into the Reel on purpose instead of hoping it appears.
Stay Recognizable on One Subject
A viewer who does not know you decides from a single Reel whether to follow. A clear, consistent subject makes that decision easy, because the Reel they just watched tells them what the next ones will be. Creators who change subject every post ask new viewers to guess.
Check What Changed
After a few weeks of changes, look at three things together: the share of reach from non-followers, the skip rate on the Reels you changed, and how much of each Reel people watched. Retensis shows all three for a connected Instagram account, so you can see whether a better opening actually reached new people.

Most often the opening. A Reel that people new to you skip in the first seconds gives them no reason to keep watching, share or follow.
